Glencore (ASX: GLC) is a Swiss-based miner and commodity trader with major copper, zinc, nickel and coal operations. It has just added Sydney to its list of trading venues.

Glencore began trading on the ASX on 14 October 2026 as a foreign exempt listing, with its shares quoted locally as CHESS Depositary Interests, or CDIs. Nothing new was issued, so this is a story about access rather than funding.

Same Shares, New Front Door

Each CDI represents one ordinary share, a strict one-for-one ratio. Holders own the economic benefit while a nominee holds legal title on Glencore’s Jersey register. Its disclosure shows 13,000,824,600 shares in issue, including 1,265,485,108 held in treasury, with none proposed to be issued before admission. An ongoing buyback means that total can only shrink.

Dividends flow straight to CDI holders on the same record and payment dates as London. Local CDIs cannot be traded in London or Johannesburg, but holders can cancel them for ordinary shares at any time.

Why Sydney, and Why Now

GLC wants a better valuation from mining-literate investors who are hunting for copper. CEO Gary Nagle has pointed to electrification, grid upgrades and AI data centres as demand drivers. Local commentary adds that a wider register and deeper liquidity are part of the plan, along with a higher profile in a country where the group already mines coal, copper, zinc, lead and nickel.

Copper Meets Local Super Money

Australia’s compulsory retirement savings system keeps feeding domestic equity funds, and many mandates prefer shares quoted in Australian dollars during local hours. A CDI removes much of the currency and settlement friction. For fund managers, it offers a way to add copper exposure without leaving the home market.

Rio Tinto Still Looms in the Background

Rio Tinto walked away from a US$240 billion tie-up with Glencore in February, but the idea has not gone away. JPMorgan analysts said after meeting management that a combination still has merit, and noted Glencore shares have beaten Rio’s by about 10% since talks collapsed. Nagle says a deeper Australian presence may open doors, though there is no set target list. Some investors see the listing as a way to warm up local holders who were unconvinced by last year’s approach.

Index Hopes and Liquidity

Nagle has said he expects ASX 200 inclusion within 12 months, and some analysts think momentum could get it there faster. Nothing is confirmed, and eligibility rules for foreign exempt listings differ from those for locally incorporated companies. Local trading depth will take time to build, and early volumes say little about long-term appetite.

What Changes for Shareholders

CDI holders cannot attend meetings in person, but they can direct the nominee how to vote on each resolution. Australia’s substantial holder notice regime extends to foreign-listed entities from 4 December 2026. However, an equivalence exemption covers London-listed groups like Glencore, which stays under UK disclosure rules. Related-party deals there rely on board approval and a sponsor’s fairness opinion, rather than the shareholder votes the ASX often requires.

Debut Reaction and What to Watch

GLC’s CDIs closed their first session at A$11.23, about 1.8% below the opening trade at A$11.44, and slightly above the London equivalent. BHP and Rio also slipped that day. One session proves little, and the longer test is whether local liquidity deepens, index providers act and any deal talk resurfaces.
